Sights and Sounds of Guatemala

 

Starbucks salutes one of its major coffee producing countries in its inaugural Rose Parade float “Sights and Sounds of Guatemala.” The marketplace in the ancient City of Antigua. Guatemala, comes vividly alive in color, texture, sound and aroma featuring live (Guatemalan folk music, Roses including fluorescent Mercedes, fire red Gabrielle, hot orange Star 2000, golden Pareo and vibrant Aallsmere yellow — over 50,000 in all — generate the sunset hues on the Highland plateaus. Warm earth tones of chrvsanthemums, with accents of pinto, kidney and coffee beans flow through groupings of natural grasses and lilies accented with Sahara, Terra Cotta and Café Ole roses.

Our Family Tree
Kiwanis International

 

A young girl plants a tree in the family garden at the center of the float, surrounded by a broad selection of fresh flowers and live plants and vegetables. The base of the float is ornately covered with roses, gladiolus and chrysanthemums. The music featured on the float is “We Are Family,” which is a tribute to the Kiwanis International organization and membership. The group chose this special theme for its 2004 Rose Parade entry, as family is of primary importance to the organization and its members.

Harmony of the Pacific

 

This first-year Rose Parade entry celebrates the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Saipan and Tinian by U.S. forces during World War II — bringing the “Harmony of the Pacific” to the Northern Mariana islands. The beauty and musical harmony is depicted on the float by fruits, frolicking birds and sea life, and the eve-catching island “Flame trees" which highlight the rear of the float Accenting the enjoyment of this island picture is music — which is depicted by a gigantic sculpted ukulele player — as well as live musicians at the front of the float and a group of native dancers at the center of this colorful entry.

Yankee Doodle
Optimist International

 

Optimist International offers Rose Parade viewers a “Yankee Doodle’ view of America as the bald eagle soars above the American flag, and drum, fife and bugles produce the notes of one of the country’s earliest songs. The massive eagle at the center of the float is created with palm fiber and magnolia leaves, shaved coconut and carnations. The American flag features blue statice, carnation petals and rice. The bugle, created with yellow and brown strawflower. plays notes made of crushed and powdered rice.
