To The Editor:
Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold cast heroic votes last Thursday,
in favor of the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act.
While the Senate did not pass this important bill to tackle global
warming, the first time such a vote has been taken in the Senate,
our Senators' votes were among an impressive 43 in support of the
measure -- an historic turning point in our approach to this issue.
Senators Kohl and Feingold and the 41 other Senators who voted in favor
of the Climate Stewardship Act should be praised for recognizing the
urgency of this problem and voting to take a sensible and effective
first step to reduce greenhouse gas emissions nationwide. They have
shown that they recognize both the real threat posed by global warming
and the potential economic opportunities presented by its solutions.
The demand for action by the American public is clear. More than 75%
support meaningful action on global warming, and there is a growing
coalition of businesses, faith communities, and state and local
governments who have already taken action to limit global warming
pollution. Companies like BP and Dupont have already achieved larger
reductions than those called for in the bill Senators Kohl and Feingold
courageously supported. The momentum will only increase as the
challenge of global warming becomes ever more clear. Let's start
putting American ingenuity to work on solving this challenge.
Sincerely,
Dr. Galen R Frysinger
