Rotorua, city, northern New Zealand, Rotorua County, in central North Island, on Lake Rotorua. It is a popular health resort situated in an area of lakes and natural hot springs. Founded in the late 19th century, the community grew as a resort and as a center for lumbering and agricultural activities. Many Maoris live here. Population (1998 estimate) 55,100.
